Politics has been my career and my passion for my entire adult life. But even as a political animal, there are many times when I want, strike that, need to turn it off.
As human beings, we only have so much attention, so much time, so much surge capacity. You are not wrong for needing a break from a world in which every choice feels political. Taking a rest does not mean that you are less knowledgeable, less caring, or less engaged. Your vote does not matter more or less than anyone else’s just because you like to keep politics off of your Facebook page or because you need to stop doom scrolling the AP wire.
There are many people who are just learning how to use their political voice. There are some who have been deeply engaged every day of their lives. But we all need a break sometimes.
As we move into the final weekend of Election 2020, it’s okay to take a step back if you need to. It’s okay to mute someone on Facebook for 30-days. It’s perfectly fine to tell friends that you’d rather talk about their lives than their views today, or ask what Netflix show they’re watching instead of which polls they think are accurate.
It’s going to be a long week, put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others.
