Today is my first day back at the office. It feels strange to be out of my home and interacting with people after months of limited contact. A bit like walking through the streets of an unfamiliar country.
I think about every decision I make — taking the elevator, touching the handrails, cleaning my new desk with Clorox wipes until it almost took the sheen off.
Masks have become a political statement for many in my line of work. Some are wearing them, some aren’t. The only person’s actions that I can control are my own, and I’m wearing my mask when in public spaces and around others. I’m also stocking up on wipes, hand sanitizer, and taking delivery of a very large air purifier.
Yes, I have already had COVID, but scientists don’t know how long any conferred immunity lasts or how being exposed again could impact my health. So as far as I’m concerned, I never had it at all.
Is this going to be easy? No. Wearing a mask and makeup is the worst. Wearing a mask all day is the worst. But if I can wedge myself into Spanx, high heels, and a dress that fit pre-COVID (I swear), a mask is the least uncomfortable thing I’m wearing today.
