I turn 39 on Saturday.
It feels like a big thing, but also anti-climactic.
When I was young, whenever I would make a remark that suggested my mother was old — too old for those jeans, too old for that song, too old to “get it” — she would always say, I don’t feel any different inside.
And every time, I would think, “Bulls**t, of course you feel different inside.”
Nope. Mom was right again. I can confirm, you don’t feel any different inside.
The gray hairs multiply. The under-eye circles darken. The flesh around your middle gets softer. You hurt yourself just reaching for your workout shoes. But you feel exactly the same inside.
Oh, and people under-35, that nonsense we were told about getting it all “figured out?” Yeah, just start letting that go right now. No one is figuring it all out, no matter how many birthday candles they put on your cake.
I was 11 when this cover of Seventeen magazine came out. I still remember it. How the girls in the 6th grade couldn’t believe they put a “fat girl” on the cover. Oh yeah, we were definitely indoctrinated into the disorder body image of the old millennial crowd. And apparently, as Anne Helen Petersen explains, we were not the only ones.
I’ve had the acoustic version of Miranda Lambert’s Bluebird stuck in my head for days. Find it on Spotify.
I needed a new moisturizer (aging skin gets dry), and this Peter Thomas Roth Mega Rich Nourishing Body Lotion came highly recommended. I love how well it moisturizes without feeling greasy, and a little goes a long way.
Rice Krispy Treats are amazing on their own, but add dehydrated strawberries to them, and they are game changing. Make Emily Laurae’s go-to snack for your next potluck. I promise they go quickly.
You deserve to take up space. So start spreading out!
