I’ve spent most of 2020 waiting for this year to end. But now that the New Year is almost upon us, I feel a growing sense of trepidation.
How much optimism is permissible before it feels like a jinx? What goals can you set when you’re not sure what comes next?
I feel a bit like I’ve come home on my birthday to find the front door slightly ajar and the lights turned off. Expectant, pulse quickening, will there be a surprise party or a cat burglar waiting inside?
To blend my optimism for a fresh start with the harsh realities of life in the time of COVID, I decided to launch my new weekly newsletter, Sunday Best.
Sunday Best features the best advice for making the most of each new week. Upcoming topics include finding small joys in daily life, managing your to-do list, and making friends as an adult. Since Thirtyish is a community, each newsletter will also feature reader comments and advice on the week’s topic.
For the first edition, we’ll be discussing small steps you can take to better manage your finances in the New Year. So what’s the best piece of financial advice you’ve ever received? Send in your answers by replying to this e-mail; you just might see your comment in the Sunday Best.
Sunday Best is a subscriber only newsletter. You can subscribe for $6 per month or $66 per year. #BreakThings is free and will remain so, but I hope that if you love this newsletter you’ll consider subscribing to the weekly.

I’m not doing much end of year shopping, but there are a handful of sales that I didn’t want to miss. Chief among them Nordstrom’s Half-Yearly. Check out my best picks from that sale and three others.
Being a new manager is a tough transition, made tougher by our current WFH, all-Zoom all the time status. Career Contessa works through how to assess your new team, delegate tasks fairly, and empower your team to achieve their goals.
The New York Times pulled together the 50 most popular recipes from their Cooking site. Unsurprisingly, Alison Roman’s “The Pasta” was the most popular. My favorite? Melissa Clark’s Sheet Pan Chicken with Plums and Onion.
Thinking about a change of scenery in the New Year? Cup of Jo talks with her readers about their decision to move to a smaller city, the pros and the cons.
Do you believe in manifesting? The idea that you can ask the universe for what you want and receive it? Oprah Magazine explains what manifesting is and what it isn’t. It also walks you through how it can help with goal setting and achievement.
Basically, we should all approach 2021 like we heard a sound in the jungle while visiting Jurassic Park. Please let it be a friendly dinosaur….
