Applying blush, being the household CEO, landline phones for kids, and more.
Wearing // This watch from March Hare, a Cartier Tank-inspired look, has been on my wishlist for a while. I've love wearing it with this MV bracelet in gold rolo link, but the photo has me thinking about an inexpensive tennis bracelet.
Watching // The Residence is a charming, lighthearted tale of murder and intrigue in The White House. The show is written as a funnier version of Agatha Christie — think Clue but with less slapstick. Very much enjoyed.
Baking // I felt like baking, so I pulled this Broma Bakery Kitchen Sink Cookie recipe out of mothballs. They’re divine. Her whole cookbook is amazing.
Does anyone else feel like they’re on an endless Tilt-a-Whirl? Slamming and sliding from thing to thing, never doing anything to the best of their ability, never able to find solid ground, always spinning?
Oh good, it’s not just me.
For the past three years and motherhood and my legal career have consumed me, I have often wondered what the other mothers are doing. How they are doing? Poorly, I’m told, but none of us seems to have time to dwell on it.
Recently, I find myself rebelling. Procrastinating more than usual. Being indecisive about simple things. Trying to turn down the static in my head through haphazard task avoidance. This, of course, only makes later worse. Only makes the to do list longer. Only makes the spinning faster.
Last week, I decided to start taking actual time for myself. Lunch not eaten at my desk. A walk not spent listening to an audiobook, just admiring the quiet. It’s a small thing, but it seems to be quieting some of the noise. I almost can’t understand how my life got so frantic that even a bowl of cereal eaten without distraction became a luxury. Maybe we should dwell more on where our time is going and why, and how we might get even a little back for ourselves.
If you feel yourself stuck in the same spiral, ask how you might take back just 15-minutes of your time today. And tomorrow. And the day after that. Until it’s habit. Until it doesn’t feel like a luxury. Until you feel worth it.
